NEW YORK (Reuters) - Samuel Peter fights the first of what the "The Nigerian Nightmare" predicts will be a busy schedule of heavyweight title defenses when the interim WBC champion takes on American Jameel McCline on Saturday.
Peter was made interim champion after holder Oleg Maskaev of Russia pulled out of his mandatory 12-round defense at Madison Square Garden last month citing a back injury.
The 27-year-old Nigerian has a record of 28-1, with 22 wins coming within the distance. McCline, 37, available as a late substitute for Maskaev after Vitali Klitschko of Ukraine pulled out of their scheduled fight last month in Munich, is 38-7-3.
Nigeria's Peter vows to be busy heavyweight champ
Maskaev will be allowed a chance to reclaim his crown once he is recovered, but Peter has no intention of yielding the title he has worked so long for.
"I'm not a heavyweight that ducks anybody," Peter told Reuters after a news conference. "Anybody who comes my way, I'll fight him.
"I'm on my way to do that. I'm going to fight all the time before I retire."
Peter said he would like to unify the belts but would not single out any one leading heavyweight as a target.
"I'm heavyweight champion. I don't have to challenge anybody. They have to challenge me," he said. "This fight is not going to take long, that's all I have to say."
McCline, who lost previous heavyweight title shots against WBO holder Wladimir Klitschko in December 2002, IBF champion Chris Byrd in November 2004, and WBA titlist Nicolai Valuev in January 2007, said he would take advantage this time.
"I have an excellent style to beat Samuel Peter," the 6-foot-6, 270-pound American told Reuters.
"Because I'm big and strong and fast and I have a great jab. Other than his looping, wide, powerful punches I have nothing to worry about. I'm very confident about my chances."
